EXA Data & Mapping Services

Project Details

Project Name:  Update/Revise Sediment Screening Guidelines for Wetland Creation/Beneficial Reuse in San Francisco Bay
Main Client: Port of Oakland through Germano and Associates, Inc.
Date Started: August 2002
Date Completed:  March 2004
Description: The San Francisco Bay Area’s Long Term Management Strategy (LTMS) has set a goal for 40% of its dredged material to be used for beneficial reuse. Wetland restoration has been a primary focus for the use of this material. Exa Data & Mapping worked for the Port of Oakland through Germano and Associates, Inc. to evaluate the current sediment values used to evaluate sediment for wetland foundation and surface cover. Results were presented to the Dredged Material Management Office (DMMO) and the public in a series of workshops.
Exa tasks included:
> Development and QA review of a sediment quality database including paired sediment chemistry and bioassay data
> Development and automation of queries to run standard statistical performance metrics (sensitivity, predictive accuracy, etc.) for a list of existing sediment quality guidelines
> Support for reference envelope tolerance threshold calculations for determining a standardized definition of toxicity in the database
> Write VBA code to run Receiver Operator Characteristics (ROC) analyses to evaluate for chemical-specific toxicity drivers in the database
> Assist in development of optimized sediment quality guidelines
> Provide documented, standardized queries and scripts to allow the Port and the DMMO to update the resulting guideline values
> Present results to the DMMO and the public
